BIO

Has a degree in Modern Languages and Literature and cooperates in the production of Curtas Vila do Conde International Film Festival since 2000. In 2012, he accepted Curtas CRL’s challenge to create and coordinate the translation and electronic subtitling service for Curtas and, later on, for other festivals such as Porto Post Doc Film & Media Festival, Guimarães Cinema Som and Filmes do Homem/MDOC Melgaço International Documentary Film Festival, since their first edition. He is also a Translation Project Manager since 2016. This job allowed him to discover and enhance some skills, as well as new team management processes. Concurrently, he started his way into filmmaking and film production, directing and producing three short films (two documentaries and one experimental) that have been screened in many film festivals in Portugal and abroad. He has won several awards and a nomination to the 2016 Sophia Awards (Portuguese Film Academy) for Best Short Documentary with his film ATOPY.

ABSTRACT

Electronic Subtitling in cultural events such as film festivals, theatre or opera has suffered a major evolution in the world of Audiovisual Translation. But it is still unknown to the general public. Therefore, it’s important to present the similarities and differences between electronic subtitling and subtitling for film, television or online streaming platforms. The complete process, from the moment the script/dialogue list is received until the second prior to the screening. As always in this line of business, we only hear about electronic subtitling when something goes wrong and some issues may occur in the split second that separates the actor’s line from the touch on the keyboard from the “spotter”. The creation of Curtas CRL’s translation and electronic subtitling service will be a case study we will address.
