Bio
Phillippa May Bennett has been based in Coimbra, Portugal since 2011 where she runs PMB Translations, specialising in Portuguese to English translations in the medical field. Prior to living in Portugal, she spent 5 years in Brazil, where she worked both as a translator and an English teacher. Her particular areas of interest are clinical trials and all types of regulatory documentation. In the last two years she has added interpreting in a clinical context to the list of services provided. She holds a Masters in Portuguese and French from St John’s College Cambridge and the IoL Diploma in Translation and is a full member of the CIoL, Aptrad and MET.

This presentation aims to shed light on the challenges facing translators and interpreters when working in a clinical context in Portugal. By means of a case study, real examples will be used to demonstrate the ethical and cultural factors involved and the difficulties and peculiarities of this type of work. In addition, suggestions will be provided on how to improve the experience for the client (patient/family), the interpreter/translator and the healthcare practitioner.
